FRAGMENTS, REMAINS, IMPLICATIONS

Not one but many, each shifted, misted by time,
each intention – lyrical, evil, lascivious – decaying
to its sharp, dark edges, the fading, intangible body
no longer stated, only implied: material becoming memory,
substance becoming idea.

You’re looking too hard; things won’t become clear that way.
What is it you hope to see? You think she is discernible here,
in spirit, or half-obscured, but if you saw her directly,
would she be who you’re thinking of? She’s the one
who told you about love, but whose voice was that?
Once, an obscure word on her lips, half-heard, revealed
everything, but what’s the meaning now?
And what, now, is she? Time has made her malleable,
endlessly subject to your devices, your fallibility;
always changing but unreliably familiar;
vivid although perhaps forgotten; powerless
yet potent; herself but not only herself,
female and male, dead and alive.
She is a shadow on a shadow
and not one but many, each shifted, misted by time,
each intention – lyrical, evil, lascivious – decaying
to its sharp, dark edges, the fading, intangible body
no longer stated, only implied; not one but many,
all of them now moving forward, stepless, silent,
until every shadowed face might as well be hers
and her faint lips might lie behind memories
of wordless mouths, making the meaning clear.
Implications, not statements, encompass everything
and direct vision fails in the half-light – she is here;
look sideways, you will know her.
